Community Days of Advocacy for Justice & Human Rights
An Invitation to Join NNIRR for
Community Days of Advocacy
For Justice & Human Rights
April 4-19, 2009
We are inviting NNIRR members, partners and allies to join in our Community Days of Advocacy for Justice & Human Rights and organize community delegations to meet with members of Congress on the critical issues facing immigrant families, workers and communities during the Congressional Spring recess April 4-19. We also encourage other activities to spotlight these issues while Congress members are in their home districts.

During the Community Days of Advocacy for Justice & Human Rights, we want to deliver a strong message that stopping the raids will not be enough. Why?
DHS-ICE conducts raids to deliberately terrorize our communities. However, the overwhelmingly majority of immigrants are NOT detained and deported through raids. That’s why we must demand that DHS-ICE suspend all detentions and deportations and be accountable for the abuses being committed every day in immigration and border control. Accountability and justice are necessary to pave the way for fair and just reforms that uphold and protect the rights of all immigrant families, workers and communities.
We will urge communities to engage members of Congress on the need for fair and just legalization and to press for:
• Ending immigration raids and stopping immigration-police collaboration
• Suspending all detentions and deportations
• Restoring the rights of all immigrants;
• Demilitarizing immigration and border control; and
• Hold Congressional hearings with our communities and to investigate the widespread abuses and rights violations taking place in immigration law enforcement, including border control, detention centers and jails and deportations.
Proposed activities for the Community Days of Advocacy:
• Organize a delegation to meet with your Congressional representatives in their home districts to share your stories and raise your voices for justice and human rights for all.
• Hold vigils outside of local DHS-ICE offices or detention facilities.
• Convene a community dialogue to share the stories of those who have been affected by inhumane and unfair DHS policies and practices.
• Write letters to the editor of your newspapers to explain that ending raids is the first step to getting the changes we need.
NNIRR will be providing a resource packet with talking points, fact sheets and other materials to present to your Congressional delegation during your local meetings.

We will collect reports from the various delegations to better understand the legislators’ positions and roles on immigration in Congress.
You’re invited to Washington, D.C. too!
NNIRR, in collaboration with members and partners, will be heading to Washington, D.C. during the week of May 11 for national days of advocacy and strategizing for accountability and reforms. We plan on having meetings with our Congressional delegations and other work to build a shared vision of fair and just immigration reforms.
