NNIRR Internship Program

Join NNIRR’s academic internship placement!

Our program provides placements for advanced college level internships for students in undergraduate or graduate level programs. We offer a limited number of spots for 3 to 4-month, part-time (~25- 32 hour) positions for a minimum of 8 weeks (although 12 weeks preferred), during spring and summer semesters. Interns can work increased hours during the summer, if necessary, to satisfy academic requirements.

We also offer select full academic year internships to students that qualify, if interested, please contact: adominguez@nnirr.org

LocationInternship placements are all virtual but can also be located out of our offices in Oakland, CA or El Paso, TX, depending on circumstances.

* While our internship program is unpaid at this time, we encourage students to seek stipends or scholarships from their academic institution and will support all reporting and evaluation requirements for selected students. In special cases, we may consider academic year-long placements.

Internship Program Areas

Just Borders

NNIRR continues to highlight border policy and practices as part of our work towards fair and just immigration reform. Our Just Borders initiative includes a focus on militarization and enforcement at the US-Mexico border, as well as advocacy on international guidelines for human rights protections at borders. Interns will assist in research, including corporate research, news monitoring, social media, website and educational tools development.

Qualifications Required: Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus; demonstrated commitment to social justice & immigrant rights; basic understanding of immigration enforcement programs; good writing skills.

International Program

NNIRR is actively engaged with global partners to promote the human rights of all migrants and refugees. Intern work areas include:

1) Program support: Assistance with research, news monitoring and updates, communications and event-planning for our international forums and initiatives, and advocacy on implementation for the UN Global Compact on Migration. The intern should be comfortable working independently, communicating with colleagues and allies from varied cultures and languages, and be reasonably familiar with current migrants’ rights issues.

2) Program support: Similar to the work above, interns will support NNIRR international partnerships which include memberships in the Bloque Latinoamericano, Women in Migration Network, and other key collaborative projects for international migrant rights. The intern will assist with research, communications, updates to website and sharing through social media.

Qualifications Required: Fluency (written) in English and familiarity with at least one of either French or Spanish; demonstrated commitment to social justice and migrant rights; understanding of basic international migration-related issues; ability to work independently.

Immigration Policy

We will continue to monitor and engage on immigration policy particularly with a focus on punitive immigration enforcement. As the Biden administration works to unwind the repressive and restrictive immigration positions and policies left in the wake of the Trump Administration, we are actively working on a range of issues. We will be working with members around the country and in coalition with other groups to do public education, policy advocacy, and active mobilization of various types. Interns will help monitor and update our policies and proposal in Congress on immigration, and support the development educational materials guide on immigration and refugee policy, human rights and intersectional issues.

Qualifications: Good writing and research skills; comfortable communicating via telephone; ability to work independently. Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills a plus.

Communications & Office Support

We are looking for extra hands to help with general office support as well as specific campaign support. This includes light office duties, including database management, fulfilling orders of publications, copying, filing, mailing, etc., as well as website and social media communications support.
