Grannies Respond – Abuelas responden

From Grannies Respond, traveling to the border: Grannies Respond started off as a small group of people in Beacon, NY, who wanted to “go down to the border and just do something” after all the terrible news of children being torn from their families and thrown in cages.

A lot has changed since then… and a lot hasn’t.

While the flurry of policy changes and court rulings can make your head spin, one thing hasn’t changed: refugees entering the United States for protection are being treated inhumanely.

And in just a few weeks, we are more than a bus of grannies. We’re a national movement. Grannies and their friends are traveling from every corner of the US (and Mexico!) to meet us in McAllen, Texas, on August 6th for 24 hours of action.

Learn how to join us!

We are grannies on a mission. We are outraged by the cruel and inhumane way our government is treating immigrant children and their families who have risked all to find refuge from violence and oppressionWe demand the immediate reunion of children with their families. Children do not belong in cages and internment camps. ICE must release parents immediately so that the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) can reunite them with their children. We demand an end to family detention. Children and families deserve due process, not indefinite imprisonment. Family incarceration is not the solution to family separation. We will not be quiet while little ones are crying alone without the love of a parent to soothe them. We will not remain idle while tent cities are built to indefinitely detain families seeking safe haven in our country. Our government and our institutions do not have dominion over our morality. We the people will be the moral compass of our country and we will not rest until compassion and decency are restored. We are traveling to McAllen, Texas, with a message of basic human decency with the hope that you will join us. We urge you to join us along the way, to create a caravan from East to West, from North to South, and grow a movement around human decency and plain common sense.

We’ve been around long enough to know right from wrong. We’ve spent our lives caring for others. And we won’t stand for this.

You’ve donated. You’ve made calls. You’ve rallied. Now join the grannies!
