NNIRR’s bilingual community resource on Biden’s immigration Executive Orders & Petition!

President Biden’s executive orders are off to a good start, but much more needs to be done to reverse harms to immigrant communities.

Dear First name,

The Biden Administration has issued a series of executive orders over the past few weeks that have begun to unwind the most harmful policies and administrative changes made during the four-year nightmare of the past administration. In addition to those related to immigration, Biden has signed executive orders addressing climate change, LGBTQI+ inclusion, public health access, and more, all of which are critically important and impact the welfare of immigrant communities.

Utilizing the power of executive orders to bring relief to immigrant communities is a good strategy for immediate measures, but Congress must also act to pass legislation to regularize the status of over 11 million undocumented migrants, many of whom are essential workers. Currently in Congress, several bills have been introduced that are important to get behind: the Dream Act was reintroduced in the Senate last week that would provide a legal pathway for Dreamers; and on Monday, the SECURE Act (Safe Environment from Countries Under Repression and in Emergency) was also introduced in the Senate, which will give Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders a path to permanent residency and eventual citizenship.

We applaud these initial steps, and assert that there is much more this administration must do to protect migrant human rights and put in place longer-term, durable policy changes.

To make sense of the various immigration related executive orders that have been signed thus far, NNIRR has produced a guide for organizers in Spanish and English. Our guide includes human rights concerns and a list of questions to facilitate community dialogue and advocacy.

FOR ORGANIZERS: you can access our guides to facilitate discussion on the impacts of these EOs at the community level.
