Say NO to Trump’s proposals for violence and cruelty

  • Shoot migrants in the legs
  • Border moats with snakes or alligators
  • Electrified fence with flesh-piercing spikes

These are some of Trump’s “other” proposals to address migrants at the border. These wild, cruel and inhumane proposals were made back in March, based on interviews with a number of unnamed sources present in the Oval Office.

The information was included in news reports recently circulated and excerpted from a new book by New York Times reporters Michael D. Shear and Julie Hirschfeld Davis, Border Wars: Inside Trump’s Assault on Immigration. Detractors had told the president that those actions would not be allowed.

At the time, Trump was frustrated with the numbers of migrants still making their way to the border, and was demanding an immediate shutdown of the border — a proposal quickly dropped. “You’re making me look like an idiot!” he reportedly shouted at officials in the Oval Office. Soon after, Trump began to again shuffle enforcement personnel — including DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who left amid reports that she just wasn’t tough enough on immigration restrictions.

Trump has claimed he never proposed a border moat.

More than these inhumane proposals, the Trump Administration has carried out a continued assault on immigration and refugee policies (like slashing refugee resettlement to 18,000, the lowest number ever). And deploying even more U.S. military troops to the border — a presence designed to intimidate and shore up enforcement. An additional 2,100 troops were recently added.

The deployment of these military troops has raised concerns about violation of the Posse Comitatus Act, against the use of the military for domestic purposes. Their mere presence is an affront to the rights of asylum seekers, border crossers and border communities.

The Dept. of Defense Inspector General (DODIG) needs to step in and investigate Trump’s deployment of over 7,000 military troops on the border!

Demand the Dept. of Defense Inspector General Investigate Border Militarization

34 members of Congress recently sent a letter called on the Dept. of Defense Inspector General to investigate the troop deployment. According to Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), who led the letter-signing,  “The military should have no role in enforcing domestic law, and this troop deployment is another scare tactic by President Trump to create a crisis and traumatize asylum-seeking children and their families. The Trump Administration needs to answer these fundamental legal questions and halt their efforts to further militarize our border communities.”
