Federal Immigration Raids in Los Angeles

NNIRR Statement: Federal Immigration Raids and Militarized Crackdown in Los Angeles Threaten Human Rights, Civil Liberties, and Democratic Freedoms

The National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (NNIRR) has grave concerns about  aggressive federal immigration raids conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles and the use of the military to crack down on peaceful protesters.. These operations resulted in the detention of over 100 community members, raising significant concerns regarding human rights and due process violations.

The deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops under Title 10 to deploy troops on community members exercising their right to free speech  is a dangerous example  of federal overreach. This militarized response exacerbates an escalating climate of fear, undermines civil liberties, and infringes upon the constitutional rights of all residents, particularly our First Amendment right to freedom of expression, and due process —regardless of immigration status.

NNIRR unequivocally condemns the use of excessive force, mass arrests, and injuries inflicted upon families, journalists and peaceful demonstrators. Such actions are completely unnecessary, erodes public trust, targets communities of color,, and are incompatible with U.S. constitutional principles and international human rights standards.

We affirm the right of all people—regardless of immigration status—to participate fully and safely in civic life, including protests against unjust policies. The suppression of dissent, especially through militarized policing, is a direct threat to democratic participation and equal protection under the law.

NNIRR calls on federal and state authorities to:

  • Release all the individuals who have been denied their right to due process
  • Immediately cease all aggressive immigration enforcement actions that endanger immigrant communities.
  • Uphold constitutional protections, including the rights to due process, free speech, and peaceful assembly.
  • Ensure transparency and accountability in the conduct of law enforcement and military personnel.
  • Permit and support independent monitoring by human rights organizations to investigate and report on abuses.

Human rights are fundamental to a democratic society. Due process is a right of everyone in the country, regardless of status. The rights to protest, express dissent, and live without fear must be upheld, not systematically dismantled.
